Head and neck restraint systems basically refer to an extension of the helmet used for protection purposes. The equipments are U-shaped with shoulder supports, tethers, helmet anchors, and two fairly long arms which when in use lie over the chest. The two arms pass over and rest on the pectoral muscles. The back side is set behind necks. The shoulders offer the key support for the systems.
All attachments from the equipment to all other external parts are done by straps. The main support to the head is done through the helmet using straps. These straps contain plastic or metallic buckles at the end which are locked to hold the helmet in place. Other straps go round the chest, under the armpit, and around the back. They are placed the same way as Hutchens devices only that they are slightly behind.
They come in a wide variety of colors. Usually the color is matched with that of the helmet. They may also be made with various patterns, strips, spots, or plain colors. The inner surface is cushioned with sponges for absorbing shock from impacts. The outer surface is made hard to prevent piercing through by sharp objects.
