The Fabulous Palace of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia

By Ted Hunter

"Extravagant" is the best word to describe Marbella, Spain. Each year, Marbella hosts thousands of guests and is considered as one of the best option if you want to spent luxury holidays in Spain. The interesting thing is that many of the visitors are the most prosperous of the rich. Probably the most famous of these transient residents was the late Crown King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd ibn Abdul Aziz.

King Fahd is known for making Marbella the second home of the Saudi royal family. He bought a property there, the Nahda complex, and developed his own version of the American White House. This particular clone of the White House is crafted from marble and gold, which it seems only those deeply involved in the oil industry could afford to purchase. Actually, the king is well loved in Marbella considering that his lavish lifestyle was able to provide benefits towards the local business. Each and every visit by the Saudi King also means a chance for employment for many people in Marbella, as the King is also rumoured to give tips in thousands of dollars. His visits produced a lot of income for Marbella; this, in turn, means a superb opportunity for the locals, to make money that they could use to fend for themselves or perhaps start their own businesses. When he visits Marbella, which he thinks about as a "land blessed by Allah," King Fahd brings together hundreds of people in his entourage. His retinue needs a great deal of support and logistics services, which ends up to an increase of production in the area. Popular businesses such as the Goyo Bakery and the El Corte Englis benefited a lot from increased production when the king visits.

King Fahd's complex is a vast property which houses more than just the previously mentioned royal palace. In fact, it was more than fitting as a royal home as it is filled with the best facilities. The need to respond to their religious obligations meant that the Saudi King had to construct an exclusive mosque for himself, the royal family and visitors that come along with him on the visit. Obviously, a luxurious residence is not complete without a swimming pool, but King Fahd's residence has a few. They have everything that they need within the complex, really, including an exclusive hospital that is manned by some of the world's exceptional workers in the medical industry.

The Saudi royal family compound can be considered the symbol of luxury and pomp in Marbella. Naturally, there are other samples of architecture in the area that could still be examples of what high living could be in Marbella, but they are all trumped by the extravagance that only oil money can buy! Then in 2002, the compound underwent considerable remodelling that increased the property's value to 108 million Euros!

Extravagance aside, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia is ingrained in the memory of the people of Marbella due to his involvement to the locale's economy. It is no exaggeration that he is considered the biggest single contributor of the "land blessed by Allah." He was acknowledged as an adopted son of Marbella. During his death, Spanish flags in Marbella were positioned at half mast for three days to honor His Majesty.
